Release of the Week: Woodes - Change My Mind

With two extended plays and one collaborative project with Elkkle already in her arsenal, Elle Graham, or Woodes as we've come to know her, has a knack for churning out a significant quantity of quality tunes. At such a young age, it's hard not to be impressed by her accomplishments thus far. She has also worked with a host of familiar producers and multi-instrumentalists such as Lanks on 'The Thaw', Set Mo on 'I Belong Here' and Golden Vessel on 'Vines'. Woodes has stated how the process of combining musical talents differs every time; with some opting for more fluid/organic approaches to creativity versus others preferring a more meticulous structured approach to planning. The result is always the same for her, with success through Triple J’s Unearthed platform.

Her latest single 'Change My Mind' begins with tranquil, almost surreal sounds reminiscent of a forest location. This evocative instrumentation goes hand-in-hand with Woodes’ ability to let the vocals float above the instrumental parts of the track. In sync with the current electronic turn for many singer-songwriter groups, Woodes’s vocals manage to balance against the constant groove of the backing, with neither overtly dominating.

With Woodes emerging from her local Melbourne scene to increasing international recognition, Woodes presents a vulnerable yet honest persona through her lyrics, with lines such as "got me hanging onto your shadow". Alternating between a staccato delivery or languid, drawn out syllables, Woodes’s unique vocal style both mimics the snare clicks as well as the broad synths, giving her the mark of an accomplished vocalist. Catch her soon, on Friday September 7 at Leadbelly in Newtown. Tickets are here: https://www.moshtix.com.au/v2/event/woodes-change-my-mind-tour/105314
