Travellers' by Tori Ferenc

Polish photographer Tori Ferenc's series, "Travellers," delves into the vibrant world of horse fairs in England and Ireland. Renowned for her focus on identity, community, and family dynamics, Tori's work captures the essence of the ethnocultural minority known as the Travellers. Often marginalised due to their nomadic lifestyle, Travellers have a rich history of living on society's fringes, contending with pervasive stereotypes. Despite this, their resilience and pride shine through as they strive to preserve their traditions and unique way of life.

A cornerstone of Traveller culture is the annual horse fairs, steeped in tradition and history, some dating back to the 18th century. Horses have always been integral to Traveller life, maintaining their significance even as modern transport like lorries and trailers have become common. These fairs attract diverse businesses, from fortune tellers and antique dealers to clothing stalls and fast food vendors. They are more than just markets; they are vibrant gatherings where families and friends reunite, travelling from across the country.

During these festive weekends, proud parents dress their children in pristine tweed suits and satin dresses, carefully navigating the often muddy fields on the outskirts of towns where the fairs are held. These events are a joyous celebration of nomadic culture, marking one of the year's most anticipated and significant occasions for many Travellers.
