Head On Photo Festival Marks 10 Years of Images
Having continually expanded over the past ten years, Head On Photo Festival is celebrating its largest program yet for this year’s iteration. Taking place for two weeks in May, the program currently includes photographic icons such as fashion photographer Helmut Newton and Masayoshi Sukita, who created some of the most iconic portraits of David Bowie.
Launching the festival on Friday, May 3 will be the announcement of the winners of the Head On Photo Awards. With submissions received across the categories of portrait, landscape, mobile and student and a prize money pool of $65 000, the award is often given to a local photographer who will go on to have an international impact.
Exhibited photographers will include the influential work of Helmut Newton who set the tone for fashion photography throughout much of the 20th century and into the 21st. The photographs that Masayoshi took of David Bowie will be exhibited in an exhibition simply titled David Bowie, and will demonstrate how these visuals helped to turn David Bowie into the iconic figure that he is remembered as today.
Documentary photography exhibitions will range from the work of David Dare Parker who followed refugees who crossed the Myanmar border in 2017, to UK-based photographer Tariq Zaidi who captured the styles of the La Sape fashion subculture in Kinshasa and Brazzaville. In addition, Paul Blackmore’s images that document the Australian beach will be shown in the exhibition Heat.
Surrounding the exhibitions themselves will be free and ticketed talks and discussions at gallery spaces across the city. Further details of the full program will be released soon.
