Rewind Two
In the 2017 film Kodachrome, which followed a dying father and his son as they drove to Dwanye’s Photo, the last place that still developed the iconic Kodachrome film, the father Ben says, “People are taking more pictures now than ever before, billions of them, but there are no slides, no prints. Just data. Electronic dust. Years from now when they dig us up there won’t be any pictures to find, no record of who we were or how we lived.”
A record is being developed, however, at Rewind Photo Lab in Glebe. On the corner of Broadway and Glebe Point Road, and set below ground by half a step, a community of photographers has developed, and in returning to film photography they are leaving a trace for someone else to find.
On February 27, Rewind are launching their second photobook, Rewind Two. A way of giving thanks to the photographic community that they have sustained and has sustained them, the book is an extension of the regular program of exhibitions held in the Glebe storefront.
Co-founder and director of Rewind, Paul Trujillo, described that in curating the photographers selected for the photobook, they followed the development of regular customers.
“As a team we keep track of our most frequent clients and we all pay close attention to their photographic evolutions so to speak. Being able to see all their images gives us a firm understanding of their prominent style and attributes which warrant an audience.”
Being immersed in the process of developing the film that photographers brings to the lab gives Trujillo and the Rewind team a deep awareness of the process-focused nature of film photography. Rather than the instant results of digital photography, film photography is an ongoing pursuit that only begins when the shutter clicks. Trujillo noted that this style indicated a “craft like approach”, and one that has only more recently developed in contrast to digital imagery.
Founder and Director of Backyard Opera, Toni Veziris has been selected to be included in this photo book, along with 33 other photographers. Marking time and making a record, Rewind Two points to the growth of a Sydney film community.
