Mix of the Week: Roza Terenzi
Roza Terenzi has seemingly emerged out of nowhere with a bang in 2018, releasing multiple EPs in the space of a few months to become one of the most talked about DJ’s in Australia.
Growing up in Perth but relocating to Melbourne, she spent five years producing music under a different alias before settling on the name Roza Terenzi – an homage to Fiorella Terenzi, a pioneering female electronic composer.
It’s been a packed 2018 for the producer. Since the release of “The O.G. EP” on Good Company in December last year, her EP’s on Voyage Recordings, Planet Euphorique and Kalahari Oyster Cult have all come out in the last couple of months due to record pressing quirks.
Settling on a moniker symbolised finding an identifying sound to Terenzi’s music after dabbling in various styles on her older productions. Predominantly focused on breaks with nods to vintage styles such as acid and jungle, her music somehow manages to sound retro while also being distinctly futuristic.
This sound also comes across through her mixes, which Terenzi has also been keeping very busy. With numerous radio shows and contributions to podcast series it was difficult to pick just one mix to feature for Mix of the Week. This set for French label La Chinerie is one of the best representations of her sound yet and perfect for listening anywhere you can find a big speaker system or quality headphones that can handle the rumbling sub-bass.
Terenzi has stated that she was initially more interested in music production than DJing but you couldn’t tell with this mix as she smoothly switches between everything from raw drum tacks to breaks tunes with smooth, glittering synths.
Roza Terenzi will soon embark on a three month European and North American tour, stopping in at London, Amsterdam and Toronto.
