Release of the Week: Set Mo ‘Fault Lines’
Set Mo have released the fifth instalment of their so far incredible song a month series which is set to carry on throughout 2018.
Online streaming has caused great disruption to the traditional single/ep/album format of releasing music. Set Mo, comprised of Nick Drabble & Stu Turner, are one of many acts adopting a different approach to how they release their music. Eschewing a typical album format, throughout 2018 they will be releasing a song the first Friday of each month, and by years end we will have 11 tracks from the Sydneysiders.
Five songs into the series Set Mo have demonstrated they are capable producing numerous styles, with ‘Communicate’ referencing house and techno while ‘Unity’ touches on breaks and rave nostalgia. All the tracks have a pop sensibility to them but ‘Fault Lines’ takes the series deeper into pop music territory.
Slower than previous releases, the tune entices with a funky, laid back groove while the smooth, catchy vocals will no doubt lead to many sing-a-long moments at the duo’s live shows. The alluring chords lend a fantastic melody to the track, synchronising with the theme of the lyrics, which, as explained by Nick and Stu, “explore the idea of being drawn to someone, faults and all as we often have no control over who we’re attracted to."
‘Fault Lines’ is one of the finest pieces of electro pop to come from Australia and is up there with the best tunes from the likes of Bag Raiders, Flight Facilities and Van She. Such is the quality, it is hard to believe the basis of the track was written in three and a half hours while in Amsterdam. ‘Fault Lines’ gives a sense of excitement and great anticipation for what is still to come in this series.
