Mix of the Week: Siaubas

Rising Lithuanian production trio, Siaubas, deliver a weird but wonderful set for our Mix of the Week.

Opium club in Vilnius is rapidly establishing itself as one of the go to clubs in Europe for those hunting out weird and experimental house and techno. Resident DJ’s and producers, such as Manfredas and V, have risen to the crest of the wave of chugging EBM and industrial influenced electronic music taking over clubs from Berlin to Eastern Europe. It is in this scene that Siaubas are quickly making a name for themselves.

Multi Culti, a record label started by Thomas Von Party and Sydney’s Dreems, has long been a proponent of the aforementioned style of music. This mix was performed for Multi Culti’s transmission series, recorded while Siaubas were in Berlin for the Opium Club takeover of Salon Zur Wilden Renate, one of Berlin’s finest nightclubs.

The mix is as eclectic as you would expect from artists within this scene. It feels like it takes an age to settle into any sort of rhythm and any time it does it throws in a curved ball such as a syncopated live percussion jam or it suddenly speeds up. All the characteristics you can expect from this style are present – slow, chugging basslines, industrial drums and weird distorted vocal samples. Not for those who like their electronic music straightforward and predictable, it nevertheless has a hypnotic feel that drags you in and spits you out.

Despite having only released a handful of edits and remixes, Siaubas have established themselves as ones to watch. Their next release is a song on the forthcoming “Opium of the People” compilation alongside Opium Club residents and friends such as Australia’s Dreems and Kris Baha.
