Single of the Week: Samsaruh “Gunpowder”
Up and coming Melbourne artist Samsaruh demonstrates song writing ability well beyond her 19 years on new single “Gunpowder.”
Samsaruh’s maturity isn’t surprising considering that despite her age, she is practically a veteran of the music business. Making the decision at eight years old that she was going to be a singer, she started writing songs at 13 and released her first EP under her real name when she was 16. Prior to releasing her first single “Golden to Thrive” mid-way through last year she had already worked with acts such as Peking Duk, Slumberjack, Kuren and Just A Gent.
Her time since that release has been packed out. “Golden to Thrive” saw her earn the title of Feature Artist on Triple J unearthed and after her second single she was named the #1 unsigned artist across the station. She has toured in support of Dean Lewis, performed at Falls Festival and NYE on the Hill, supported LANKS on his album tour and performed with Hot Dub Time Machine as a guest vocalist.
“Gunpowder” begins with heavy thundering drums that give the feeling of going into battle. Samsaruh has listed Massive Attack and Sinead O’Connor amongst her influences and this is evident here. The synths evoke an updated version of the formers darker work and her soaring vocals and ominous lyrics recall the latter. Produced by Chris Collins, quieter moments provide some relief and accentuate the sheer power of the track.
Samsaruh’s hectic schedule looks set to continue for the time being. In May she will join Peking Duck on their “Wasted” tour as the main support in Perth and Adelaide as well as festival slots at Ocean Rhythms and the Bendigo leg of Groovin the Moo.
