On her punchy debut, replete with Pop-punk singalongs and Surf-rock lamentations the Melbourne-based artist Alex Lahey sings on heartbreak, longing and young adulthood boredom. Album opener Every Day’s The Weekend packs prosaic observations into an exuberant Pop-Punk celebration of loving infatuation.

As is common to the entire album, Every Day’s The Weekend sounds like it was recorded live, which only adds to the energy already harboured by Lahey’s song-writing. Title-track, I Love You Like A Brother is anthemic in its expression of familial affection. This track blends the heavy rhythmic drive of The Ramones with a more contemporary, melodious Pop-Punk approach in its chorus.

I Want U introduces Surf-Rock elements; shifting down-tempo, Lahey settles her enthusiastic giddiness for an almost Morrisey-esque profile of an infatuation. Alex Lahey has penned a diverse and engaging Pop-Punk record that calls on a surprisingly diverse range of musical influence from 70s Punk to 60s Surf-Rock.
