Release of the Week 10/12: Confidence Man ‘Santa’s Comin’ Down The Chimney’
For fans of electro, house and EDM, Australia’s favourite party band have provided a holiday track to dance the niceness away and embrace the naughty. From Melbourne, Confidence Man have crafted their own unique niche in a crowded electropop field. With members Janet Planet and Sugar Bones accompanied by the enigmatic Clarence McGuffie and Reggie Goodchild’s beats, their music is upbeat, energetic and fun. To celebrate the holiday season, they have released ‘Santa’s Comin’ Down The Chimney’, which is accompanied by a new Christmas themed lyric video.
In typical Confidence Man style, the track begins with a firm beat and varied electronic sounds while luring the listener in with Planet and Bones’s seductive vocal style. Following the first line, “Santa’s comin’ down the chimney, Santa’s got a present for me, Santa asked me what I want, I said I want a beat”, the song hits the listener with a mean beat. This bassline slaps away, setting a firm sonic foundation to dance to. The track progresses like a house track, teasing the audience with a few layers of electro effects, both high and low, before building up more and more. These effects include some Christmas bells to fit the theme, charging across the melody like reindeer flying through the sky.
The flow of Confidence Man’s lyrics remain a standout feature for the band, with Planet bouncing between words in time with the thumping bassline. Lines like “make it loud, make it pumping, make me feel like I’m on something” play to their electropop audience. There is a layer of playful insincerity in the song, as the twisted EDM depiction of Christmas takes the innocence out of Santa’s nice list.
To accompany their new track, Confidence Man have also released a lyric video, fit with Santa’s sleigh, presents and 8-bit versions of the band. Confidence Man will be keeping the holiday spirit pumping as they play in Fremantle at the Left Bank, this Christmas Eve.
