Mix of the Week – Deeper Frequency Ft. Matt Meler & SODF
Deeper Than House’s weekly podcast tends to stay in the depths of the genre known for confining itself to between 120-125 BPM, but this week proved to be a warm ray of Bondi sun amid the cold winter slump. Featuring DJ Matt Meler and house duo SODF, Deeper Frequency brings a bright, out of season house vibe that channels Sydney’s eastern suburb’s clubbing culture. The resulting mix is two hours of tropical bangers.
The Deeper Frequency podcast usually sticks to a strong a deep house sound. However, through Matt Meler’s nu-disco and tech house influences and SODF’s softer house contributions, the mix offers a wide range of EDM genres and styles. In other cases, the clashes between Meler and SODF’s subtle differences in style and the conflicting genre conventions would be too much variety, leading to confusion in the rhythm and a convoluted, inconsistent pace. Fortunately, Deeper Than House didn’t deliver a typical mix, with their strong and consistent deep house vibe grounding the mix and tying together all the sounds’ varying styles. This comes across to the audience in multiple effective ways, whether it be sampling prominent basslines over a melody or mixing tones by layering over multiple songs. For example, the light tropical house guitar accompaniment from Flight Facilities’ Foreign Languages is sampled over a thumping bass and a more aggressive female vocalist. This has the effect of taking the brightness of Flight Facilites and blending it together with the harder deep house of Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
While the Deeper Frequency crew are known for providing some consistently strong mixes, this week’s podcast stood out as a brief weekend of summer sun, blessing Sydney with its brightness.
