EXCLUSIVE: Harrison Storm Premieres New Music Video for ‘Run’

Backyard Opera is proud to premiere the music video for Harrison Storm’s ‘Run’. A singer/songwriter from the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Storm’s music is heavily rooted in his acoustic guitar and laid back vocals, with influences including Ben Howard, Bill Withers and Neil Young. ‘Run’ is no exception, with a gentle guitar riff driving his soft but emotional lyrics. The track delicately balances pop and folk conventions. It evokes the spirit from his hometown, with lyrics contemplating waves and freedom, directly from the picturesque beaches of the Mornington Peninsula.

The music video follows the relaxed yet emotionally charged tone of the track. It explores the poignant tale of a man reminiscing over good times with his late father. Exploring the father and son relationship, from both perspectives, the song creates an image of this poignant depth through representations of the beach and nature. The beautifully shot film clip uses the surf, a funeral and a car ride to tear at the viewer’s heartstrings. Starring Australian actor Jeremy Lindsay Taylor (Blue Healers, Home and Away, Sea Patrol), it is hard to escape the emotion of ‘Run’ with such powerful images. We quizzed Harrison about the track and the music video to get his thoughts on how everything turned out.

What drove you to the soft, emotional pop style?

I’ve always been drawn to that style. I’m a big Benjamin Francis Leftwich fan so this track was really influenced by the energy his sounds give off.

Tell us a bit about how the track was developed. How did you go about writing the lyrics and melodies?

I don’t usually write songs using a loop pedal, but last year I set it up in my lounge at home and had a play. I put the main riff down and sung what is now the verse melody over the top and started really liking it.

Late last year I was in the UK touring and had a few days in the studio with Nick Atkinson and Edd Holloway and we pieced the song together.

The accompanying video tells a story about loss and father/son relationships. What led you to use this story to match the song’s tone?

My manager and I were throwing back and forth video ideas and this idea in particular struck a chord with me. Jamie, my manager, has a history with the film and television industry and knows how to pull a heart string or two. The videos story touches on the idea of resilience in a way that means a lot to me. With such a big life event, such as death, the immediate future can seem quite foggy and unsecure, so to have the father’s family so close by his side really accentuated the idea of comfort in the face of the unknown that I wanted the song to portray.

What inspired the surfing theme of the video? Are you a surfer yourself?

I grew up surfing with my Dad so there’s definitely a connection to that and the video clip. I try and surf as much as I can!

What is the one thing people should know before watching the video and listening to the track for the first time?

Maybe grab a few tissues cos this one may induce a tear!
