The Top Five Gyros

While many different cultures have a version of the meat-slowcooked on a stick and served in a wrap, the Greek gyros is pretty hard to beat. Whether you choose chicken, lamb or pork, the soft and fluffy wrap and charcoal cooked meats combined with fresh vegetables and rich sauces makes for a delectable, hand-held meal. Here’s our top five of Sydney’s best takes on the Greek gyros.

Best of Mother’s Day Dining

With Mother’s Day only hours away, siblings and Dads are panicking all over the country. There’s a lot at stake when it comes to celebrating the most important woman in our lives, and late present deliveries, floral disasters or no gift at all are a sure-fire way to start the day off on the wrong foot.

Brunch British

For the month of May, swap out your avo toast and bircher bowls for the full British brekky at Butcher and the Farmer at Tramsheds. Kicking off this weekend, the big breakfast that began them all is being whipped up by ex-My Kitchen Rules duo Will Stewart and Steve Flood and will feature Smeg’s Union Jack toaster.

Tacos N Tequila for Cinco de Mayo

This weekend a Mexican fiesta is hitting Sydney’s oldest streets in celebration of Cinco de Mayo, and it’s set to be as delicious as it is colourful. The festival, aptly named Tacos N Tequila, will be held in the Rocks, and aims to showcase the very best Mexico has to offer, including street food, entertainment, art and margaritas.

Fresh: Mary’s CQ

Since February this year we’ve had an ear to the ground to hear the rumblings beneath Macquarie Place. The latest venture for those who breathed new life into the Lansdowne and the Unicorn takes Newtown’s favourite burgers and chicken to the heart of the CBD and adds a wholly vegan redux of the entire menu.

Fresh: Sash

Sash Japanese is latest venue to make the trip up the Hume Highway and so far it’s made that journey more gracefully than most other convoys. Originating in Melbourne, Sash has been a hit in Sydney since day one, serving up flavours both brazen and familiar.

1821

1821 on Sydney’s Pitt Street is a European institution. With “Made in Greece” emblazoned on the glass windows, and a ten feet tall Greek flag painted on the wall, customers know they’re in for a night of extravagance before they even cross the threshold.

The Top 5 Chicken

Perhaps because it lacks a strong discernible flavour of its own when compared to other meats such as lamb, beef or pork, practically every culture in the world has come up with their own take on chicken. From the dirty bird to the roast chook there is an endless variety of cooking methods, marinades and batters out there, so we’ve collected our five Sydney favourites doing their take on chicken.

Fresh: Baraki

Inspired by the backstreet bars of old Athens, a new corner to pull up a stool and have a chat over shots of ouzo and gin cocktails has found its way to Sydney’s Alpha. Part of one of the city’s oldest institutions for Greek dining and imbibing, Baraki is tiny yet goes well beyond to satisfy all day drinking and snacking.
