The Hunter – A Lens-Based Exploration by Patricia Voulgaris
"The Hunter" is a photographic series by New York-based artist Patricia Voulgaris that interrogates the dynamics of power and control. Voulgaris, who earned her BFA from the School of Visual Arts and an MFA from the Yale School of Art in 2024, creates work that navigates the space between personal intimacy and performative gesture.
In this work, figures drawn from her own life, including family members, her partner, and herself, inhabit dreamlike environments where hierarchies are suggested but never fixed. The bodies appear liminal between presence and absence: glimpsed through windows, drifting in space, or conjured by imagination.
"These characters move through a world I've built, part personal memory, part fiction, where power and belonging are never static," Voulgaris explains. "There's a constant negotiation between visibility and erasure. By collapsing the real and the imagined, I question traditional structures of authority and ask: who gets to be seen, and who fades into the margins?"
Through poetic visual language, The Hunter invites viewers to reconsider the architecture of dominance—revealing how identity, control, and vulnerability are always in flux.
