Mix of the Week 31/1: Bad Andy “Dusty Vinyl Mix”

Mix of the Week 31/1: Bad Andy “Dusty Vinyl Mix”

Bad Andy is Backyard Opera’s new resident DJ and today we are very excited to share his debut mix. The mix is based off Bad Andy’s extensive vinyl collection, which he began in 1992, with a specific focus on jungle music. This electronic genre from 1990s Britain is built upon dynamic rhythms and break beats. As such, Bad Andy has described this mix as “old dusty breaks”. Built using a Technics 1200s record player and a Traktor S4, it combines the old and the new through Bad Andy’s eclectic taste.

The mix was influenced by an old record produced by French house pioneer Jackson Fourgeaud. Known for his work under Jackson and His Computerband, Andy described the record as “romantic”, not in the sense that it depicts love but in the sense that it combines and fuses multiple emotions and energies. While he himself does not make it onto the actual mix, this influence is heard in the shifting timbre of the mix. This is mainly in the sensational track list. As it was built from Andy’s old collection, there are some real gems in the mix that serve to highlight his obscure but musically focused sound.

Across the forty-five minutes, tracks like “Dun’ Like a Kipper” by Hoodwink, which are rooted in a heavy hip hop sound with upbeat scratches, guitars and rapping, give the mix an energetic high, while other tracks like Anakÿne’s “Introducin da man” have vinyl crackles and distant whistles in the high end to create a lo-fi ambience that mellows the mix down. One of the standout tracks, according to Andy, is Pépé Bradock’s “Peer Pressure”, which features some of the wild break beats, record scratching and jazzy melodies that push the mix into a weird place between house, hip hop and techno.

Listen to the track here and be sure to stay tuned for more mixes from Andy.
