Head of State “Underground Spiritual” Lookbook
Derived from the constant tension between Western imposition and traditional African idols explored in Chinua Achebe’s writings, “Underground Spiritual” by Head of State keys on the clash between traditional and non-traditional culture that reached a crescendo during the 1960s and 70s.
Founded in 2016 by Taofeek Abijako (at age 17), HEAD OF STATE (HOS) is a representation of postcolonial African youth culture today. It operates as both an homage to this diverse space and a dissection along with critique of the effects western imposition has had on it. HOS is born from this unique clash and thrives on it, aiming to provoke change and conversation through overt socio-political imagery and references.
