It is a release that allows us to step inside the head of the 25 year old and experience her inner-most thoughts. For a first release it does everything it should. It allows us to connect with the artist and get to know them, it captivates sonically and it has music that pairs with the message of the lyrics perfectly.
The message of the song is filled with St. South’s own insecurities and fears. The percussion is quaint and subtle and along with the roaming piano works incites feelings of being in a jazz bar or hotel lobby. In this case we are in the lobby of the artists headspace. My favourite aspect of this song is the artist's voice. It does something that most musicians can not often achieve without compromising their vocal quality - it sounds Australian. It feels familiar. It feels real.
The clicks that come in during the songs higher moments create the perfect crescendo in the music, which only adds to the ubiquitous aspects of the song. As far as first releases for 2020 go, Does Your Brain Ever Get This Loud?, may not be the most captivating, it is however a perfectly placed first step by St. South in creating a holistic image of an artist to a plethora of new fans I am sure she will be gaining in the new year as more music comes along.
