Release of the Week 27/9: Dom Dolla “San Frandisco”
The artist behind “Take It” and “Define” is back with a fresh new track to get feet moving out on the dancefloor. Dom Dolla is one of Melbourne’s best and fastest rising DJs in recent memory, becoming a global name with his heart-pumping style of electronic dance music. Normally, he delicately balances techno and house, but on “San Frandisco”, Dom Dolla leads more towards house in his personal love letter to San Francisco, one of the most culturally vibrant cities in the world.
The track has been making the rounds as part of Dom Dolla’s live show for about a year now, with the artist making minor tweaks and adjustments. The result is a concise and cohesive dance-ready three minutes. The beat is the best element of the song and its foundation. The kick drum is tight, with almost no bass, while the snare and hi-hats balance out the high end. Then the music drops and the kick thickens to thump alongside the deep booming bass. There is a distant synth melody that is side chained to the rhythm section, giving it this pulsating sound. This ends up creating most of the musical interest, driving the house vibe and breaking the repetition of the drum machine. The refrain of “San Francisco, where’s your disco?” is fun, albeit a bit cliché, serving its conventional purpose of signalling the drop. There is a fun little spoken anecdote in between the first and second drops from a local San Fran DJ that acts as a thematic guide for the track. Following the speak about the hippie movement’s lingering spirit, the exciting second drop is established in the colourful vibrancy of the city.
On the track, Dom Dolla wrote: "I've been testing this track out on the road for the better part of the 12 months, tweaking the moments until I felt it had just the right amount of dance floor appeal. It's been so exciting to watch people connect with it right in front of me. I wrote the hook after wrapping up a club show at Audio in San Francisco back in June 2018. The crowd was really gravitating towards sustained, rolling grooves that night, so when I got back to the hotel I really felt the need to make one that was just for them. The speech in the breakdown is a sample of a local San Franciscan dance legend who I've respected for a long time, and I felt it was just too perfect to let the track out into the world without it."
