Review: Nerve - A.S.M.R

One of my favourite things about the Hip Hop scene in Australia is the idea of inclusion and support. The bands scene is great but it is every person for themselves. Everyone wants to be Kevin Parker. Everyone wants to play Glastonbury. In Hip Hop, ambition is equally high however the alumni aren’t looking to do it alone. The idea - let's break the roof off this place and bring everyone we can with us.

‘I don’t do no instagram beef’ - say Nerve in his latest release A.S.M.R. He doesn’t have time for that. He is about the music, not the hype. The latest release from Brisbane rapper Nerve, personifies the idea of getting the team together and taking everyone to the top, and he couldn’t have picked a better trio.

A.S.M.R has everything you have come to expect from a banger beats track. It begins with the roaring aggression that comes from one of Australia’s most commanding voices at the moment - Raaj Mahal. He goes hard from the start and creates power instantly. The beat is assaulting in the best possible way.

Nerve uses is distinctive flow that is beautifully Australian in its linguistics. He pulls you in and takes it down and brings it back with masterful control of his track. He is the director of this orchestra of fire as he says - ‘He’s Stanley Kubrick in the situation.’

When Marty Bukkaki comes in, he does what Marty Bukkaki does best. Takes the song to a completely new place that is playful, hard and accessible as it gets. He has honed this skill with Triple One where he essentially creates the bridge in the tracks with his complete direction changes. It sounds like you are listening to your friend from school who is now killing it. You can’t help but feel a sense of endearment and hype from what he has to say.

For the tracks ending we get a verse from Obi Ill who bleeds pure aggression, confidence and sadistic loveliness with a look into a night on MDMA, loose woman and even looser times.

Nerve has gotten the crew together for this one and is its hard, fast and hyped. Perfect for a pump up at any time of the day.
