The Weekly Collection #81
The latest approaches in sustainability dominate this week’s collection; alongside a huge wrap-up of upcoming sales.
Canberra’s First Slow Fashion Market
This weekend, the nation’s capital will be hosting its first ever Slow Fashion Market, in a fitting reflection of the country’s gradual move towards increasingly ethical fashion consumption. As stated on the events’ website, “slow-fashion aims to put the brakes on the pace of over-production, over-consumption and over-disposal of garments, by instilling an awareness, appreciation and connection to the process of quality and ethical production”. The Market was founded last year by Emma Morris and Lee Glezos, who also created the well-known Makers & Shakers and Round She Goes markets. Inspired by Fashion Revolution’s 2015 “White Paper”, which exposed the “broken” nature of the mainstream fashion industry (due to its reliance on a systematic exploitation of workers and an unsustainable use of natural resources), the Slow Fashion market “carefully curates the best in local established and emerging sustainable fashion, giving the public easy access to multiple labels under the one roof”. Featuring a huge range of sustainable clothes, accessories and more; it’s sure to be an unmissable event for all you environmentally-conscious fashionistas. If you want to refresh your wardrobe and ensure you’re investing in locally and ethically sourced and produced garments, be sure to hit up the Market, which will take place this Saturday August 17, from 10am to 3pm in Canberra’s Albert Hall. For more information visit the website here (and psst, if Canberra’s a touch too far for you, worry not! The Slow Fashion Market will also be hitting Sydney up in September, so stay tuned!)
Allbirds Launches Sustainable Socks
Sustainable fave Allbirds are upping the ethical footwear game with their latest release: guilt-free, environmentally-friendly socks. Their first foray into accessories, Allbirds’ sock collection are made of an all-new material by the brand called “Trino”: a hybrid textile made from the Merino wool comprising the brands’ “Runners” and “Loungers”; eucalyptus tree fibres which are used in their “Runners”, “Skippers”, “Loungers”, “Toppers” and “Breezers”; and also recycled plastic water bottles. With its killer combo of natural and recycled fibres, Trino makes for socks that claim to be soft, moisture-wicking and cooling. Allbirds socks are available in three lengths - hiders, quarters, and tubers - and a multitude of colours, to suit all your under-footwear needs. Additional features include reinforced toes and heels and a non-slip footbed, if you wanted further convincing that these are the sustainable socks you never knew you needed. For more information, and to snap up a pair, hit up the Allbirds site here.
Subscription boxes: the future of fashion?
This week, Nike has launched their “Adventure Club”, a footwear subscription box for time-poor parents. The box is available via three plans at varying costs, and allows consumers to be sent between 4-12 brand new pairs of kids’ sneakers per year (from Nike or Converse), eliminating the need for painful shopping trips. On their website, the Nike Adventure Club states its mission as providing access to quality Nike and Converse kicks; a give-back program supporting local kids activity programs and shoe refurbishment for disadvantaged kids; and championing of kids activity and exercise, both recreational and competitive. Additionally, the Adventure Club provides a prepaid shoe bag for completely worn out shoes that have reached the end of their life which are recycled into running tracks and playground surfaces via the Nike Grind program. At the moment, the Adventure Club solely dishes out kids’ shoes - but the launch raises the question of a future in subscription footwear for adults, too: would you splash out for brand new kicks on a monthly basis? To find out more about the new venture, visit the website here.
