The Weekly Collection #74

Art meets fashion, new fronts in sustainability and another international collaboration, all this in the Weekly Collection.

Virgil Abloh at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago

Suggesting that the pinnacles of the art world are open to fashion becoming part of the canon, this week at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago an exhibition opened entirely dedicated to the creative work of Virgil Abloh. Formerly of Off White and a frequent collaborator with Kanye West, the now artistic director of men’s at Louis Vuitton has been an agenda-setting creative ever since his emergence onto the world stage. Entitled Figures of Speech, the exhibition grapples with Abloh’s visual language and narratives. Michael Darling, chief curator of the MCA, highlighted that “Laying this foundation of music, design, architecture, and fine art was the thing we really wanted to get across. People might know of his work in one or two fields, but not four or five. That’s the story we really ultimately wanted to tell.” Figures of Speech is on show until September 22.

Consumers Want (And Will Pay For) Sustainability

The biggest word in fashion, sustainability, is getting more than its fair share of attention. Reportedly the word that was on everyone’s lips at Copenhagen’s annual Fashion Summit last month, each week sees an announcement of a fashion house’s latest attempts to reduce, re-use and recycle. This week, Chanel has taken a piece of the Evolved pie to develop silks that reduce the need for chemicals during the manufacturing of fabrics. E-commerce platform Nosto followed it up, suggesting that almost a third of consumers will shell out if they know a brand is working responsibly. With consumers ever more questioning than ever, brands are going to have to be genuine in their messaging if they want a slice of that sustainability cake.

Swatch x BAPE

The latest announcement in the world of collaborations was a cross-over between Swiss watch maker Swatch and Japanese brand BAPE. Launched on June 1 at a party in Tokyo, the collaboration includes six watch models named after influential metropolises such as Tokyo, London, Paris and New York. Already, consumers have been getting their mitts on the watches at flagships stores since the launch, but global watch sales begin on June 15, so there’s still time to grab one for yourself. As two brands that are not adverse to flirting with pop culture, that match has seemed to work, and if the launch was anything to go by, we could be seeing more in this area.
