The Top Five Gyros

The top 5 Gyros place in Sydney

While many different cultures have a version of the meat-slowcooked on a stick and served in a wrap, the Greek gyros is pretty hard to beat. Whether you choose chicken, lamb or pork, the soft and fluffy wrap and charcoal cooked meats combined with fresh vegetables and rich sauces makes for a delectable, hand-held meal. Here’s our top five of Sydney’s best takes on the Greek gyros.

Gyradiko Bexley

Located in the heart of the Greek community in Bexley, Gyradiko has some of the finest gyros around. Known for their soft pita bread that wraps all the ingredients together, they have recently opened an outpost in Steam Mill Lane, Haymarket. These gyros have inspired a devoted following by expanding their legion of disciples one wrap at a time.

Stix & Pita

Taking a build-your-own approach to the gyros, Stix & Pita lets it be known that their inspiration is none other than the homeland of gyros. Stuffing their wraps with gourmet toppings and crispy chips, it’s hard to leave room for more but with desserts this good as well, don’t go too hard, too early.

Yiro Yiro

Taking an alternative spelling but a classic approach, Yiro Yiro in Belmore is clear that their focus is on the main event, their gyros. Choose from rotisserie pork or skewered chicken, pork or lamb and top that with their house-made sauce and you’ll be licking every last morsel off the tips of your fingers. For those looking for a vegetarian option to haloumi pita is crispy, salty and creamy, all in one.

Belmore

Sun – Thurs, 10.30am – 9pm
Fri – Sat, 10.30am – 10pm

EAT GRK

EAT GRK takes the standard options of gyros and steps everything up. Of course, every order comes with chips and a drink, but here not only do we have the standard soulva fillings, but pitas stuffed with sheftalia sausage or tiger prawns. The sausages are a specialty from Cyprus and if you haven’t had one before, now’s the time to start. Filled not only with pork mince but onion, parsley and then tied up in caul fat, putting these inside a wrap was a moment of Olympic inspiration for EAT GRK. Have a bite at either the Beverly Hills location or EAT GRK in Parramatta.

Beverly Hills

Plateia

For a gyros experience closest to those that have been served in the busy streets of Athens since the ancients, head over to Plateia in Potts Point. The no nonsense joint on Baywater road turns out a steady stream of soft breads, juicy soulvas and savoury sauces to ensure that as much as times change, there are some traditions that must stay the same.
