Best of Mother’s Day Dining

With Mother’s Day only hours away, siblings and Dads are panicking all over the country. There’s a lot at stake when it comes to celebrating the most important woman in our lives, and late present deliveries, floral disasters or no gift at all are a sure-fire way to start the day off on the wrong foot. So, this year why not skip the unfortunate glittery cards and cheesy teddy bears and go straight for the good stuff – food and wine. Luckily, we’re not the only ones thinking this way, and some of our favourite restaurants are offering a special treat for this Mother’s Day.

Lot.One

Lot.One have brought the heat this year, providing a souped-up version of their lauded Autumn menu just for Mother’s Day. The sophisticated Potts Point venue will have you on mum’s good side for months with its live acoustic music, complimentary florals and French champagne for all mothers. The menu is as urbane as it is fresh, with highlights including the slow cooked brisket, beetroot gnocchi, half duck, and corn and saffron risotto. If you’re going all out, then why not just opt for the sharing menu? You can pick five share dishes for $65pp and you’ll have trouble even narrowing it down to that. To end your evening on a sweet note, pick one of Lot.One’s ‘life-sized’ interpretations of the Cadbury Favourites box – Ferrero Rocher, Bounty, Snickers and Turkish Delight.

Nour

If your mama loves a bit of middle eastern flair then Nour is the perfect place to spoil her this year. Nour has curated a delectable sharing menu for $89, featuring seven fresh dishes broken up into four courses. Dishes to look out for include the hummus with wood-fired tomatoes, fried eggplant and caper leaf; brussel sprouts with freekah, fennel, barberries, and smoked confit garlic labneh; and the pan seared snapper sayadieh with saffron and cuttlefish rice, nuts and leek. For dessert, you’ll be treated to the rose and milk bouza with persimmon granita and pistachio and we bet you’ll be asking for the recipe. There is also a vegetarian version of the menu, so no one in the family will get left behind.

Fred’s

There’s no better way to celebrate mum than with Italian classics done well. Fred’s has selected two speciality menus just for Mother’s Day this year, offering a 3- and 4-course option for $50pp and $125pp respectively. The optional first course is antipasti to share, which features creamy burrata, prosciutto, almonds, olives and Fred’s famous Fougasse. There’s also fried mozzarella with tomato for kids. If you’ve opted for the three course menu then you’ll start with the entrees, with a choice between ocean trout tartare, wood oven greens and mushroom cannelloni, grilled spicy carrots, and seafood spaghetti. The main menu is a sight to behold and features celeriac schnitzel, steamed snapper, chicken “al mattone,” and a grilled beef fillet – all with tantalising sides to refresh your palette. Choose between the miso chocolate tart or the bombe Alaska for dessert and try your very hardest to roll yourselves out the door.

Queen Chow

This one’s for the lowkey mums who know they’re queens and don’t need a specialty menu to prove it. Merivale’s Queen Chow provides the self-proclaimed ‘best yum cha in the Inner West,’ and Enmore locals begrudgingly agree. Buns ‘N’ Bubbles translates to all-day yum cha, and features all the Cantonese classics: inventive dim sum, delicious bao, and noodle masterpieces, which are complimented with larger landmarks like the roast duck with plum sauce and Peking duck pancakes. This weekly instalment is the perfect spot to celebrate mum without all the fanfare.
