Fresh: Mary’s CQ
Since February this year we’ve had an ear to the ground to hear the rumblings beneath Macquarie Place. The latest venture for those who breathed new life into the Lansdowne and the Unicorn takes Newtown’s favourite burgers and chicken to the heart of the CBD and adds a wholly vegan redux of the entire menu.
Mary’s Circular Quay (CQ) is the first opening in the dual venue of what used to be jazz bar The Underground. Inhabiting the upstairs bar, Mary’s CQ will be serving up Mary’s classics such as the standard cheeseburger, the Mary’s burger and the mushroom burger as well as whole half and double chickens along with Young Henrys and Grifter brews. The vegan versions of each of these items are turned out of a veg only cool room and separate kitchen and include fried cauliflower instead of chicken, a unique vegan patty and a vegan take on Mary’s secret sauce.
Exploding any preconceptions of what these veggie takes on a previously meat-focused menu could be like, co-founder Jake Smyth highlighted “This ain't Mary's Health Food & Salad Bar - it's fucking delicious plant based food, designed to make your carnivorous mates jealous.”
The wine list here includes an array of organic drops and all can be enjoyed either inside or around the thirty outside seats which could be the sanctuary those at the more corporate end of the CBD need. Mary’s promises that the high-octane tunes which make their Newtown joint unique will also have a place in the city.
Still on the way is the live music venue located beneath Mary’s CQ, that will continue the tradition of some of the best live music in the city played in the city’s core.
