Review: Aunty Social - Crack A Deal

We had the privilege of getting to know Canadian bedroom pop artists - Aunty Social a few months back when we caught up for one of our ‘A conversation with’ pieces. The Toronto based twenty something is now back in the spotlight with her latest release - Crack a Deal. It is the third single released from an upcoming EP titled - The Day My Brain Broke.

Crack a deal sees Aunty Social doing what all good artists do. Growing in her skill set. Crack a Deal is lo-fi bedroom pop at it’s best. The tracks initial hook is created through some beautiful backing vocals that pulled me in instantly. Her lazy neo-soul vocals are beautifully considered and no sound feels out of place or wasted.

The songs guitar work is a high point for me. It is quaint and mature and uses tones that take you to a place of pop psyche so familiar and present in Canadian music like Homeshake and Crumb. The solo that plays out is so softly spoken and fitting that it is like Aunty Socials emotions are playing it themselves. Each verse grows with production quality with the percussion and vocals constantly having simple yet fitting layers added.

‘Pop’ - gets thrown around a lot and is a bit of a blanket term used constantly. Aunty Social is proving with each release that - yes, she is a pop artist due to the accessibility of her music but her style and genre is finding it’s place in the neo soul and psych world which is so prevalent in music today.
