Mix of the Week 14/11: Yuma X’s Mix for BYO

Mix of the Week 14/11: Yuma X’s Mix for BYO

This week, electronic duo Yuma X, also known as Lucy Washington and Jake Smith, have blessed Backyard Opera with an exclusive mix. Producing out of Jake’s home studio in Narrabeen, on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, and Forbes Street Studios in Woolloomooloo, Yuma X have now garnered over 5.3 million global streams of their music which includes current singles “Chasing Patterns”, “Swimming Pool”, “Matchstick” and their debut EP Home Recordings. To celebrate the release of their latest hit single “What You Want”, they have put together a half an hour mix, brought to you by Backyard Opera.

Yuma X’s mix is perfect for you, the reader, as it channels the Backyard Opera style. With a stellar track list, range of genres and slick production, the mix has an upbeat but chill vibe. The relaxed, dance-ready tone perfectly matches the laid-back aesthetic of BYO. There are multiple genres on display, giving the mix a lot of variety. Yuma X move fluidly through downbeat disco ballads, with Daft Punk’s “Instant Crush ft. Julian Casablancas”, upbeat ambient dance tracks, like the Channel Tres’ remix of Tyler, The Creator’s “Earfquake”, fit with jazzy saxophones, distant vocals and a whole lot of reverb, and a bit of chill hip-hop, with Frank Ocean’s “DHL”. These genres add a bit of variety, but never stray out of the same slow, soothing tone. One of the best features on the mix is the transitions. Moving through such a great and diverse track list would be jarring for any producer, but Yuma X perfectly blend songs between each other. A great example of this is the transition between Sault’s “Don’t Waste My Time” and DFA’s relaxed remix of “Dare” by the Gorillaz. In order to maintain the same calm energy, Yuma X sample Harvey Sutherland’s “Why Look Back?” as a bridge between the two songs.

We are very excited to present Yuma X’s exclusive mix, not only for the quality it brings but for the way it encapsulates Backyard Opera’s chill but diverse style. Be sure to listen to the mix below and check out Yuma X’s new single, “What You Want”, here: https://yumax.lnk.to/WhatYouWantPR
