The Weekly Collection #67

The new guard, the old guard and the changing of the guard – it’s all change in the Weekly Collection.

Gucci Commits to Diversity

Speaking during the Conde Nast International Luxury Conference 2019 in Cape Town, Marco Bizzarri, CEO of Gucci, made a strong statement in support of diversity. “I really believe, especially in our industry, creativity is a consequence of diversity. And the more you are exposed to diversity, the more you are creative, because you see things from different angles,” explained Bizzarri. The Italian fashion house drew cricitism earlier this year for a racist Gucci balaclava which imitated black-face and evoked Golliwog figures. Since then, the brand has committed to inclusivity in its design processes, hiring global and regional directors for diversity and inclusion. The latest comments from Bizzarri suggests that the brand has taken this to heart.

Emerging Fashion Designer of the Year

The creative force behind Melbourne label Blair Archibald has won the BT Award for Emerging Fashion Designer of the year. Archibald himself has focused on committing to the local manufacturing of the label’s garments and taken a considered approach to fabric sourcing. Runners up were Minhee Jo of Aaizel and Courtney Holm of A.BCH. Judged by a panel of industry experts, the prize is presented in partnership with the Australian Fashion Council.

What’s Next for Raf

Since leaving American fashion house Calvin Klein at the end of last year, speculation has been rife as to where lauded Belgian designer Raf Simons would end up. In an interview with British newspaper The Observer, Simons opened up about where his career might be headed next. Working with Danish textile company Kvadrat, a long-time partner, Simons will open three demountable houses in Milan. Designed to be both domestic and work spaces, there will be a café accessible to the public within the complex. What happens after that? We’ll wait and see.
