The Weekly Collection #55
To kick things off for 2019 we check back in on a couple of announcements that you might have missed as last year drew to an end, and see where the world of fashion is heading next.
Australian Fashion Foundation Scholarship Winners
Helping to bridge the divide between local Australian fashion designers and international markets, the Australian Fashion Foundation awards its yearly scholarship which recognises the work of a young Australian designer. The prize includes a grant of $27,867 as well as a well-placed six-month internship. Winners this year were Helena Dong and Amanda Nichols, both of RMIT, and were selected by a judging panel composed of Simone and Nicky Zimmermann.
Raf Simons Leaves Calvin Klein
Only six weeks away from Calvin Klein’s show on the New York Fashion Week runway in February, Simons and the iconic American label have announced they will part ways. During his two year tenure with the New York fashion house, Simons established the 205W39NYC high-fashion line, and sought to subvert the imagery that Calvin Klein otherwise referred to, Americana and youth. Perhaps making a turn towards a broader audience, Calvin Klein will reduce its focus on high-fashion following Simons’ departure.
LAVFW
Take a guess at what the above acronym might stand for. Stumped? Well then we won’t be seeing you at the first vegan fashion week, to be held in Los Angeles from February 1 to 4. The city which has already banned the sale and manufacture of fur and is a trailblazer in cruelty-free lifestyles, will be challenging labels and designers to go through their products and ask what impact they had on those we share the earth with.
