The Weekly Collection #54

What a year it’s been. As we come to the final Weekly Collection of the year, it’s 2018 all over again, with models being paid astronomically high amounts, a luxury label embroiled in a racism controversy and Australian fashion making waves.

Forbes Highest Paid Model of 2018

At the top of the fashion industry there is no room for error, and models are being compensated thusly. In a world where modelling is not only about your look on the catwalk, the highest paid individuals are opening their own cosmetics lines, pursuing a standalone movie career and beefing with Donald Trump on Twitter. Number one this year goes to a not surprising name, and one who is definitely in the thick of it. Kendall Jenner has been named the highest paid model of 2018, with $31.15 million in earnings through the 2017-2018 financial year. But compared with the rest of her family, Kendall still has a way to go.

Prada in Blackface Controversy

You would think if you are selling a $766 monkey figurine you might think through the associations that could come along with such an item. Prada is not of this view. Part of the Paradamalia line, the small items feature cartoon characters, and with the monkeys, Prada has chosen to go down the pickaninny route. With oversized red lips on the black and brown figures, the items had more than a passing resemblance to blackface caricatures. Issuing an apology, Prada stated “The Pradamalia are fantasy charms composed of elements of the Prada oeuvre. They are imaginary creates not intended to have any reference to the real world and certainly not blackface.”

Carla Zampatti Receives Latest Accolade

Next year, as part of the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival, Australian designer Carla Zampatti will receive the highest honour of the festival, the Grand Showcase. With $250 000 going towards Zampatti’s runway show, the award recognises the contribution Zampatti has made to Australian and international design. The 2019 event is structured around the theme ‘Power to the dreamers’ and Zampatti has indicated she will make greater use of textures and animal print for this show than in previous collections.
