Valentino to open in Sydney

Making a landing in Westfield Sydney, Italian fashion label Valentino will open its first standalone store in Sydney this December. First founded by Valentino Garavani, who went on to lead the fashion house until 2007, the latest store is the continuation of current creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli’s vision. Having won designer of the year at this year’s Fashion Awards, Piccioli is definitely not shy of making his mark. Speaking With Vogue, Piccioli noted, “In my designs, what I want to do is subtract all this weight, [and] try to do couture as I saw it through my eyes as a kid. I want to stay faithful to that kind of imagination.” This has been realise din the store, whose walls, floors and façade are singularly constructed from Venetian terrazzo.

Is Fast Fashion Slowing Down?

With ever increasing awareness of the lack of sustainability of the so-called fast fashion industry, the bigger players have been making conspicuous attempts to burnish their green credentials. The latest front in this campaign is H&M’s most recent green flag, the H&M Foundation. This Foundation organises the yearly Global Change Awards, which seek to highlight the work of labels and brands that seek to improve the world of fashion. Whether this can be done with H&M’s model remains to be seen. H&M outsources all of its production to companies it has limited control over, and this is where 97 per cent of the ecological impact of fashion occurs, according to a report by Quantis. If fast fashion really wants to reduce its impact, it may have to take its foot off the accelerator.


Tigerlily Jumps Into Jewellery

Australian fashion brand Tigerlily, most known for its swimwear, announced that it is making the leap into jewellery with the Vesta collection. Bridging contemporary and historical aesthetics, the items are constructed from acetate and metals but hark back to the ethos of the 1960s. Hopefully this line will continue the focus that Tigerlily has in the past signalled, with 50 per cent of the 2018 collection made from recycled fibre base cloths, according to creative director Amelia Mather.
