The Weekly Collection #51
This week we’re taking a look at the upcoming brands and designers and how they are choosing to present their work in new ways.
The End of the Runway?
In an innovative showing last week in Berlin, four emerging designers came together for a unique presentation. Olga Khristolyubova, Johanna Liebl, Don Aretino and Maria Miottke showcased their garments under the creative direction of Tanja Bombach with choreography overseen by M.J. Harper. Entitled NOW YOU MAY TELL THAT I’VE BEEN SEEN BY YOU, the showing merged dance, club culture and fashion. While only eight looks from each designer were seen, the events points to how young designers are seeking out new ways of presenting their work. With the garments themselves providing inspiration for the choreography, there is increasingly no need for fashion to be showcased in the conventional way.
032c Cosmic Workshop
Taking another divergent approach to highlighting the work of designers and fashion manufacturers, cult Berlin label and magazine 032c showcased their first women’s ready to wear collection in London’s 180 Strand, a semi-unused 1960s office building. Taking its next step, 032c has never following a traditional trajectory, having started out hustling t-shirts and socks through an online store and previously released a utilitarian menswear collection. Taking inspiration from designer Maria Koch’s own upbringing in the raves of Berlin’s late 90s, in an interview with WWD Koch described the collection as “minimal, sexy and with a DIY approach.”
