The Weekly Collection #50
Lyst wraps up this year in fashion, IMG announces its Fashion Laureate winners and (more) drama from this Italian fashion house: check it out in the 50th edition of the Weekly Collection.
Lysts’ Year in Fashion
Fashion platform Lyst has released a wrap-up on this year in fashion, from the most popular Insta Brands, the biggest trends, the biggest celeb style influencers and the brand names with the biggest social capital. In the style influencer category, sisters Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian took out number one and two respectively, followed by the stylish Duchess of Sussex herself (Meghan Markle, in case you forgot). According to Lyst, King Ky has “driven more than 2 million searches this year”, which seems pretty influential to me. The biggest trends that defined 2018 include sustainable fashion, sport luxe, “dad” fashion, “meme” fashion and pre-Raphaelite Prairie, which apparently is a thing now. The top three most-wanted Insta brands were eco-friendly sneaker brand Veja, cult sustainable fave Reformation and crazy colourful Attico (followed closely by the masters of the slip skirt, Réalisation Par). Last but not least; the brand names that y’all needed splashed all over you to make you feel cool: Supreme, Champion and Fila. What a year it’s been.
IMG Announces 2018 Australian Fashion Laureate Winners
This week, IMG announced the winners of the 2018 Australian Fashion Laureate Awards which honour the major contributors to the Australian fashion industry. The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Edwina McCann, editor-in-chief of Vogue Australia, and best Emerging Designer was awarded to Albus Lumen. Zimmermann took home the prize for Best Australian Retailer whilst Adut Akech Bior, who recently hit the runway for Victoria’s Secret, became the first recipient of the IMG Model of the Year award.
Dolce & Drama
Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabbana are in hot water after a series of racist social media posts which led to a China show cancellation. The brand’s #DGTheGreatShow catwalk presentation was to take place in Shanghai earlier this week, until a hacker allegedly took over the D&G instagram, as well as controversial co-founder Stefano Gabbana. On Monday this week, a mocking video of a Chinese model attempting to eat Italian food with chopsticks, which was accompanied by tasteless, innuendo-filled commentary, was posted to Weibo - but was taken down amidst backlash less than 24 hours later. But things only worsened from there, when screenshots of DMs from the brand’s ‘Gram as well as Stefano’s began to circulate, depicting vitriolic and derogatory racist language. Immediately, Chinese and international celebrity guests and models began to pull out of the show, and finally - it was cancelled. Although the brand has since claimed they were hacked, critics are skeptical, and it’s no mystery as to why. Stefano has faced backlash after other racist, anti-LGBTQI+, and sexist comments in the past. As Diet Prada puts it - sorry D&G, but it’s 2018. You’re cancelled.
