The Weekly Collection #32
In this week’s collection, find a newer and easier way to make your fashion ethical, see how Sports Illustrated and the Queen of England used fashion to make two very different public statements and find the details on the QVB’s 120th birthday shopping event.
Sustainability made Simple
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that the hottest trend in fashion at the moment is sustainability. It’s all about holding your fave brands accountable for their environmental and ethical choices - but it’s not always easy. Luckily, the Good On You app is here to make sustainable shopping so much more simple. Now available globally on Android and iOS, the app rates brands on how they treat people, animals and the environment and recommends similar, more ethical options. Sports Illustrated’s Show-Stopping Statement
At the 2018 Sports Illustrated Swim Search, a new kind of accessory accompanied model Mara Martin down the runway: her 5-month old baby. Wearing a sparkly gold one-shouldered bikini, Martin strutted down the catwalk breastfeeding her child, in a clear feminist statement of empowerment and beauty. Posting on her Instagram the next day, Mara thanked the world for it’s overwhelmingly positive response and Sports Illustrated for the opportunity: “because of you, my daughter is going to grow up in a better world.”
Her Majesty’s Shade
Fashion has long been used as a means of protest, from the subtle to the overt. During US President Donald Trump’s recent visit to England, which has been marked with multiple protests across the nation, none other than her majesty Queen Elizabeth II engaged in what’s been read as a bit of shade, in the form of a brooch. Worn during an audience at Windsor Castle on the day of Trump’s arrival, the brooch may not look particularly controversial, but it was actually gifted by Trump’s predecessor, President Barack Obama. A chance coincidence, or an intentional snub to the current President? You decide.
