The Weekly Collection #30

Read on for the ins and outs of ASOS’ new and improved animal welfare policy, non-binary streetwear and the Make-A-Wish Wishful Warehouse Sale.

ASOS goes cruelty free

A new and improved animal welfare policy by ASOS has outlawed the use of all animal-derived materials. The list has included fur (including angora), feather and down, bone, shell (including mother of pearl), horn, mohair, cashmere, silk and anything from vulnerable, endangered, exotic or wild-caught species. The ASOS guidelines state that, “No animals should be slaughtered specifically to produce products sold through any of ASOS’ websites.”  By-products of the meat industry will be acceptable, for example leather from offcuts of the industry. PETA has praised ASOS for their decision, releasing a statement that said they “applaud ASOS for leading the charge for compassion in fashion. In response to Peta’s campaigns, consumers are changing the face of the industry by demanding that designers and retailers ditch animal-derived materials in favour of cruelty-free alternatives that look great without causing suffering”. The new guidelines will come into effect in January 2019.

Non-binary streetwear

Genkstasy, a Japanese-inspired streetwear brand, creates clothes with no gender attachment. The brand focuses on non-binary clothing and community-building through creating pieces that look and feel good on real, living people. The Australian brand makes their designs locally, with transparent processes and practices as well as ethically-sourced materials. Their latest collection is called Dancing Shadows and is now available for limited pre-order online. The collection “draws on the balance between light and darkness” and is a “celebration of individual strength and beauty”.

Wishful Warehouse Sale

The Wishful Warehouse Sale by Make-A-Wish Australia has launched and will run from Thursday, June 28 until Saturday, June 30. Australian labels such as Aje, Ellery, Ginger and Smart, Sass & Bide and Scanlan & Theodore will be participating in the warehouse sale, with up to 50-70 per cent off designer brands. All the proceeds will go directly to Make-A-Wish. In Sydney, the set up will be in Waterloo and in South Yarra for those in Melbourne.

Romance Was Born

Australian fashion label Romance Was Born – you’ll remember them for their eccentric presentation at Hubert’s this MBFWA – have announced that they’ll be in Paris for haute couture week. This will be the first time they’ll be showcasing their collection in the Paris fashion circuit. Their latest collection is called Step Into Paradise, and has been inspired by native Australian fauna and flora in collaboration with artist Jenny Kee. The show will take place at Union Chrétienne de Jeunes Gens de Paris on Monday, July 2.
