The Weekly Collection #4
Black Friday sales and the launch of Australian Amazon, applications for next year’s BT Emerging Designer Awards and an Alice McCall super sale – some of the Weekly Collection #4.
Amazon Launches in Australia
As of 22nd November, Amazon launched its Australian Outlet. While so far only approximately 500 retailers are participating as part of the soft launch, it is expected that the site will continue to grow in retailers and customers over the coming weeks.
The launch of the site falls not-so-coincidentally with Black Friday – where it is expected that many sales will be available in the line of fashion, electronics and sporting goods. Many adverse effects are predicted for leading retailers with the launch of Amazon, but the effects on the Australian fashion industry are yet to be understood.
2018 BT Emerging Designer Award
Applications for the 2018 BT Emerging Designer Award are now open. The Award is dedicated to encouraging young and emerging designers in their pursuit of a career. The recipient of the award receives a prize valued at $70,000 in total - $10,000 of which includes financial support. Other features of the prize include a flight to London, two years of financial planning, business advisory and support and a look book styled and produced professionally, courtesy of Vogue Australia.
Previous winners include this year’s recipient, Kacey Devlin, as well as distinguished Australian designers Christopher Esber as well as Beth and Tess MacGraw.
#ICouldHaveBeen
Renowned creative directors have come together to launch the Kering Foundation’s latest White Ribbon for Women campaign. The #icouldhavebeen campaign aims to bring forward that 1 in 3 girls and women worldwide experience violence at the hands of men. The likes of Christopher Kane, Stella McCartney, Salma Hayek Pinault and Gucci’s Alessandro Michele have taken part in a shoot and a series of short films to share their opinions and experiences of violence against women.
This campaign comes ahead of International Stop Violence Against Women Day, which takes place on November 25 this year.
Man-made Fibres Found in the Stomachs of Deep Sea Creatures
Sea creatures in the deepest place on Earth – the Mariana Trench – have been found to have fragments of synthetic fibres in their muscles, stomachs and body tissues. Fibres include Rayon, Lyocell and Ramie as well others commonly used in the textile industry, such as Nylon, polyethylene and polyvinyl.
It has been inferred by experts that it is highly unlikely that there are any marine ecosystems left in the world that are completely untouched by manmade debris created by huge industries.
This comes as a huge wake-up call to the fashion industry in its environmental practices and use of materials that aren’t biodegradable.
