The Weekly Collection #24

Read on for a rundown of this year’s Met Gala, news of Australia’s first full-range Victoria’s Secret Store and Shakuhachi’s liquidation sample sale.

The Met Gala 2018

This year’s Met Gala has been and gone, and once again, it was a celebration of the intricacies of fashion and the industry. Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination was this year’s theme, which was “designed to create a dialogue between fashion and the masterworks of religious art in the museum’s holdings”, according to Vogue US. This year’s stand out costumes – as a general consensus – were Rihanna with her bedazzled Pope-inspired outfit, Priyanka Chopra and her golden beaded headpiece and Gigi Hadid’s Versace stained-glass one-shoulder gown (amongst many, many others).

Lana Del Rey and Jared Leto attended with Gucci creative director and devout Catholic, Alessandro Michele, dressed as a Holy Trinity of some sorts – embellished with gold embroidery, crowns and Lana’s blue-bird halo. Stella McCartney took Miley Cyrus and Paris Jackson, spreading her sustainable, ethical and vegan fashion message by example. Other unforgettable outfits were worn by Solange, Kate Bosworth, Kim Kardashian, Stella Maxwell, Sarah Jessica Parker and Amal Clooney.

Australia’s First Victoria’s Secret Lingerie Store

Sorry Sydney-siders, the first Victoria’s Secret lingerie store is set to debut in Melbourne this year. The full-range store will be opening its doors in Melbourne’s Chadstone shopping centre. The official opening date is yet to be announced, but it has been confirmed that the brand’s complete range will be available – Victoria’s Secret Pink, Victoria Sport, dream angel collection and body collection. The store will occupy four existing stores in the shopping centre, making it one of the largest in Chadstone.

The Chanel Cruise

The latest Chanel catwalk became the true definition of ‘cruise’, a fashion concept pioneered by Coco Chanel herself. This year, Karl Lagerfeld and his team docked a 148-metre-long ship in the centre of Paris – the cruise was fitted with a swimming pool and on-board piano bar. Bruno Pavlovsky, Chanel’s president of fashion told The Guardian that “we wanted to set sail, to take you on an actual cruise”. The clothes were a mix of house-made Chanel tweed, beaded evening dresses, stripes and ocean blues – all fit for a luxury Chanel cruise. There were a total of 900 guests in attendance, all of whom were charmed by Negronis, champagne, seafood and truffle chips on the upper deck of the cruise.

Aje in Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden

Aje have collaborated with Wendy Whiteley and her late husband, Brett Whiteley’s studio for the presentation of their resort 2019 collection, marking the brand’s 10th anniversary. Located at the bottom of Clarke Park in Sydney’s picturesque Lavender Bay, Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden was (and is) the project of grief-stricken Whiteley after her ex-husband’s tragic death in 1992. Aje’s collected was entitled “Woman”, and became a tribute to Wendy as a brave partner with a creative mind. Five of Brett’s artworks were selected and became true inspiration for the pieces that creative directors Aje designed. Wendy continues to maintain the garden with the assistance of North Sydney Council and a group of volunteers.
