The Murlocs are a stones throw away from the ludicrously creative psych-rock trailblazers King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard; sharing a few sonic similarities, except in a more blues-driven, indie-rock fashion, the band also shares members Ambrose Kenny Smith and Cook Craig alongside independent members Cal Shortal, Matt Blach and Mlanden Lalić Milinković.

Like pigs in their sty (who are apparently actually very clean animals) ‘noble soldier’ is lo-fi gritty mixed with clean-cut seasoned song writing that is hard to ignore because it’s as catchy as pigs are adorable.

There’s just something in the unrefined tunefulness of this track that speaks straight to the understated yet turbulent heart of the young adult who leads a life replete with both abstract and very real responsibilities, alongside a contradictory burgeoning need for licentious and alcohol-fuelled late night débauche.

This one is a step or two outside of the bands predominantly blues driven psychedelics (see their previous full-length ‘Young Blindness’ for some insane psych-rock feat. Harmonica). It’s a borrowing from perhaps The Strokes, or even (dare I say) The Killers penchant for sentimental indie-rock turned ‘garage-style’ in true Murlocs fashion. ‘Noble soldier’ is a damn addictive pairing of razor-sharp lo-fi tones and summery ‘I-don’t-give-a-f***’ vibes.
